8/18/2012 Mount Spalding (13,842 feet) and Mount Evans (14,264 feet), Colorado

Mount Spalding (13,842 feet) and Mount Evans (14,254 feet)

Today we decided to climb Mount Evans via Mount Spalding (an unranked 13er) and the West Ridge from Summit Lake.

Mount Evans actually has a road to the summit (one of two 14ers having one, the other being Pikes Peak), where there is the worlds highest observatory, among a few other things.  This of course means there would be a ton of people at the summit once we got up there.  The route we were taking today actually starts a few miles up the road to Mount Evans at a place called Summit Lake.  From here we would climb up to the 13er peak Mount Spalding, descend off the north side and then head along the West Ridge of Mount Evans where we would hit the summit.  From the summit, we would descend directly down the Mount Evans Northeast face and walk the road back to the Summit Lake parking lot.

Elevation gain:  2000 feet
Trip length:  5 miles

There were Marmots all over the climb down Mount Spalding.
More Marmots.  They let us get unbelievably close.

Great shot of Mount Bierstadt and The Sawtooth as we connect with the West Ridge of Mount Evans.
